The IRS Isn’t Interested In Preparing Your Returns
January 13th, 2012 by Raymond Grove
Tax Girl, a regular contributor for Forbes, recently posted a blog “Are You Ready for Government Prepared Tax Returns?” covering the idea of the IRS creating provisional returns on behalf of the taxpayer. Now although this is an interesting idea the service has scrapped any plans for such a program.
How do I know? Well, I heard this direct from IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman in the December 5th meeting surrounding the IRS’s vision for a real-time tax system. You see, initially this was part of the real-time tax system conversation as Tax Girl notes correctly in her blog; however, following feedback from stake holders in the preparer community this idea was taken off the table and I don’t see it coming back.
What is not off the table, however, is the movement towards the IRS’s grander vision of a real-time tax system. That idea continues to gain momentum, especially after the release of new tax gap numbers.
