We hate to put a damper on the last month of summer, but IRS penalty season is right around the corner! We have learned the IRS began mailing penalty notices for both late original filings and missing or incorrect taxpayer identification numbers (TINs).
The official information on the mailing schedule from the IRS is as follows:
- IRS Notice 972CG (for tax year 2010 information returns) will be sent between July 30, 2012 and September 20, 2012
- IRS Notice CP2100 & CP2100A (for tax year 2011 information returns) will be sent between September 12, 2012 and October 24, 2012
